Platinum Britannia
The Great British Platinum Britannia coin is the newest platinum bullion product minted by a government. Crafted from .9995 pure platinum, it is also eligible for inclusion in an IRA.
The Platinum Britannia, first introduced in 2018, is a government-issued platinum bullion coin available to investors. Issued by the United Kingdom and struck by the British Royal Mint, it joined the prestigious Britannia collection, which includes the Gold Britannia (launched in 1987) and the Silver Britannia (introduced in 1997). The Platinum Britannia continues the tradition of premium bullion coins backed by the UK Government.
This bullion coin is struck from .9995 fine platinum and is primarily available in the standard one troy ounce size. Additionally, the Royal Mint has released fractional versions, including a 1/10-ounce coin and a limited proof ¼-ounce coin. Platinum Britannias are distributed by the Royal Mint in tubes of 10 coins and monster boxes containing 100 coins (10 mint tubes). The coin is legal tender in the United Kingdom, carrying a face value of £100 (Pounds Sterling).
Design & Details of the Platinum Britannia
Obverse
Until 2023, the obverse of the Platinum Britannia, like other British coinage, featured the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the £100 denomination. In 2018, a guilloche background design was introduced to the Britannia line, including the platinum version, adding a layer of sophistication and security. From 2023 onward, the obverse displays King Charles III in left-profile relief, his first appearance in the Britannia Series. King Charles III is depicted without a crown, in a design that symbolizes continuity and modernization.
Reverse
The reverse side of the Platinum Britannia features sculptor Philip Nathan’s iconic depiction of Britannia, the female personification of British strength and resilience. She stands wearing a flowing gown, her figure captured in motion as strong winds sweep her attire. Britannia holds a trident in her right hand, symbolizing naval power, while her left hand carries a shield and olive branch, representing protection and peace. Waves crash at her feet, further emphasizing her role as a symbol of endurance.
This design of Britannia has historical roots, first appearing on Roman coins issued by Emperor Hadrian in 119 AD.
Since 2017, the Britannia reverse has included a radial sunburst background. This design not only enhances the coin’s aesthetic appeal but also serves as an anti-counterfeiting feature.
The one troy ounce platinum weight and 99.95% purity of the Platinum Britannia are fully guaranteed by the British Government, offering investors peace of mind.
