Platinum American Eagle

The Platinum American Eagle coin, introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1997, was authorized by an act of Congress. It is the only platinum coin guaranteed by the U.S. Government for both weight and purity. Classified as legal tender, the coin carries a face value of $100—the highest denomination of any U.S. coin—although the intrinsic value of its one ounce of platinum is significantly higher. Interestingly, the face value of the 1 oz Platinum Eagle is double that of the 1 oz Gold American Eagle.

Design of the Platinum American Eagle coin

The original design, created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti in 1997, features a striking portrait of the Statue of Liberty. Depicted gazing confidently forward, this iconic image represents freedom and opportunity. The obverse of the coin also includes the year of minting along with the phrase “In God We Trust,” stamped beneath the date. The reverse of the coin, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, features a stunning depiction of an American Bald Eagle in flight, set against the backdrop of a rising sun with radiant beams emanating from it. In the upper field, the text “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is prominently displayed, while the right side bears the inscription “.9995 PLATINUM 1 OZ.” arranged across three lines. Along the lower periphery, the denomination is elegantly expressed as “$100.”
