History of the Peace Silver Dollar

Despite Congress failing to pass a bill for a new coin commemorating the end of World War I, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts championed the creation of the Peace Dollar. The coin was introduced to honor the sacrifices made during the war and to symbolize the hope for lasting peace.

Production began late in 1921 after Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon approved the design. Anthony de Francisci, a novice coin designer at the time, won a competition to create the Peace Dollar’s design. His wife, Teresa Cafarelli, served as the model for Miss Liberty, depicted on the coin’s obverse. The reverse features an eagle perched on an olive branch with the word “PEACE” inscribed below—an intentional departure from the more militaristic designs of previous coins.

Unique Characteristics and Production

The Peace Silver Dollar was minted with high relief for the initial 1921 coins. However, this design proved impractical for mass production, leading to a lower relief design from 1922 onward. The series was minted in large quantities, and while most coins were widely distributed, it was hoped the message of peace would resonate with the public.

Notable key dates in the series include 1921, 1927, and 1928, which are highly sought after by collectors. Matte-proof Peace Silver Dollars were also struck but are exceedingly rare, with only six proof-like specimens graded by PCGS and NGC.

The Peace Silver Dollar series was created in response to the Pittman Act of 1918, which required the U.S. Mint to replace millions of Morgan Silver Dollars melted and sold to support Britain during the war. Despite the Peace Dollar’s relatively short production run, its message of peace remains powerful.

Collectibility and Investment

Peace Dollars, like their predecessors, the Morgan Silver Dollars, are highly collectible. While the majority of Peace Dollars derive their value from their silver content, coins in uncirculated or high-grade condition command significant premiums. Cherry-picking for rarity and condition is essential, as some dates are far more valuable than others.

However, collectors and investors should remain vigilant. Fabricated or altered coins are known to exist, particularly for proof-like Peace Dollars. As with all precious metals, it’s crucial to buy from a trusted and accredited dealer.
