Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf
The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf, issued by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1988, is available in both one-ounce and fractional sizes, each containing .9995 pure platinum bullion.
The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf is Canada’s official platinum bullion coin, produced by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM). First issued in 1988, it was available until 2002 in five denominations, all containing .9995 pure platinum. In 2009, the Platinum Maple Leaf returned in a 1 troy ounce denomination, featuring an updated portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
The initial production of the Platinum Maple Leaf began on September 22, 1988, during a special ceremony where the first Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was also struck. However, shortly after the coin’s release, the Ford Motor Company announced testing on a potential alternative to platinum for use in catalytic converters. At that time, the automotive industry accounted for about a third of global platinum consumption. This announcement led to a steep drop in platinum prices, and in early 1991, platinum briefly fell below the price of gold—a rare occurrence, though it has since happened again. However, Ford’s testing yielded no viable replacement, and platinum prices eventually rebounded above gold. During this volatile period, the Platinum Maple Leaf was temporarily suspended and later reinstated.
Design of the Platinum Maple Leaf
Obverse
Coins minted before 2024 feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, a standard on all Canadian coinage. Over the years, different renditions of Her Majesty were used, reflecting her progression from youth to seniority. The inscription “ELIZABETH II” runs along the top, with “50 DOLLARS” and the year of mintage at the bottom. Beginning in 2024, the obverse displays a portrait of King Charles III.
Reverse
The reverse showcases the iconic Sugar Maple Leaf, a national symbol of Canada. The word “CANADA” appears at the top, while “FINE PLATINUM 1 OZ PLATINE PUR” is inscribed along the bottom. The number “9995” is displayed on either side of the leaf, signifying the coin’s platinum purity. Since its founding in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint has gained a reputation for producing technologically advanced and visually striking bullion coins like the Platinum Maple Leaf.
Unique Features and Global Standing
